In "The Two Towers," there is a CG-shot during the battle which breaks out on the exodus towards Helm's Deep...
... in which Legolas appears to leap on to a moving horse by grabbing its halter as the horse gallops past. I saw "The Two Towers" seven times, and this was one of a dozen or so very fine images or events or line-readings or sounds that I craved seeing and hearing again. "You shall not pass," of course, is a famous similar moment from the first film.
I don't get that sense of wonder from anything in the spots or the trailers for "Robin Hood." I think that's not just a matter of taste; I think it's a wider problem for the film. Why, even if there is a beach assault scene, would you risk letting an audience think "oh that's Saving Private Ryan"? Why would you include an arrow-splitting-an-arrow scene? Why would you use an "arrow-cam" POV shot? Those three on their own are enough to put me off. All to say the "tapping in" you describe is exactly what I think it's not doing, and why I feel pretty good about holding it short.
The IRNM2 short from last weekend will cushion the blow if I'm wrong.
