I wouldn't have minded seeing a drop like this in the Pre-Pandemic Era, not one bit. In fact, I probably would've welcomed it. But this is telling a whole different story, and it sucks.
Looking at the trajectory of the numbers, while it's very difficult to say with much assurance, it does feel like the Delta variant is having a significant impact. You look at the numbers; when theaters just started reopening, you had some decent numbers with Kong, Quiet Place 2, people did go to see those movies, and i felt like a certain percentage of the population welcomed the return to movie theaters. And the thought was, as more people get vaccinated, and more people feel safe, the numbers would continue to rebound.
F9 did okay; not great, but it did have a bigger number than Quiet Place. Black Widow felt like a complete unknown to the way it was released to the public. It felt like quite alot of theatrical dollars were left on the table.
Now here we are again.
Or, the "fans" of this dreck just aren't that interested. If this movie couldn't do any more opening weekend business than this Ryan Reynolds product, that doesn't say much for that franchise. If the current forecasts hold, the 3 openers this weekend will tally up near 45 million or so, so i guess if you had one big opener, that number would be pretty good.
Like i said, it's impossible to know where things stand, with all this confusion going on. But a drop from 27 million to 7 million? Really?
