Haynes is savvy enough to know he doesn't have to make the Velvet Underground of music docs to capture the spirit and give the proper context for the band's story. sometimes it just comes down to being five or ten years too early for what you're putting out to the world. Lou was obviously a complicated dude, even in his musical genius (or because of it). but can't help feeling that a part of him never got over firing John Cale, and realizing that as good as his own solo stuff could be in flashes, maybe not as consistently great as when he was "forced" to collaborate with equally talented bandmates who he also despised or resented for their own talents
