the fundamental flaw is the script doesn't know whose story it really is: Alana's or Gary's? consequently, it's hard to really get invested in either of their journeys, which aren't terribly far either. and so the climax when we're supposed to feel some great catharsis by them (finally) coming together doesn't feel earned or really consistent with how they've acted toward each other throughout the rest of the story.
but it's still a reasonably fun hang, as long as you don't expect it to hit any of the traditional story beats
