I asked myself all the way through the film: why is Gary pursuing this girl?
She treats him like dirt when he meets her at school. She's one big put down in the entire scene. Before she goes to meet him for that drink, PTA shows us what a little pain in the a** she is, so when she goes, the audience is playing with loaded emotional dice.
The first chance she gets, she hurts him. She IMMEDIATELY chooses to go out with the other kid actor (creepy Lance), who she perceives as being way more together than Gary, better looking, cooler, etcetera. Again, she's basically hateful to Valentine. She keeps telling Gary he's too young and just a boy; he doesn't seem to get the message. I was curious about Lance's age, never found that out.
And she's got one foot out the door from him through every vignette. Every episode she's trying to do something spiteful to him. She's suddenly "dating" William Holden (yeah, ok). She's saying and doing hurtful sh*t every time he turns around. That this character is attracting anyone is a definite stretch of the imagination. But here she is, dating William Holden and Joel Wachs. OK.
Even toward the end, she shows she'd prefer to be totally elsewhere. After the whole Jon Peters ridiculousness and the driving of the truck down the hill, she's out of there yet again, this time to go to work for a Safdie brother. And putting Gary down the whole while. What a *itch.
I never really got the connection. By less than halfway through I started hoping he'd find something better, in no way should that be too difficult, and have the story, or what there was of a story anyway, go off in some different direction.
Was I supposed to be falling in love with Alana? Really? There's no chance of that happening on my end.
Was this some kind of bizarre prequel to Punch Drunk Love? I was hoping by the end for some serious Mattress Man action.
It's a cheat getting to that ending. The ending is completely blunted by everything seen before it. I'm supposed to believe she truly "loves him". Yeah, ok. Until the next opportunity rolls along, which would be in about 2 minutes if the movie kept going.
I kept waiting for this to cheer me up:
