So: As recently as 5 years ago, on Oscar morning i would get up at 4, drive 30 miles, and meet with a bunch of friends, where we'd have breakfast together and watch the Oscar nomination announcements, compare our predictions, and make an all around huge deal out of the morning. This went on for DECADES.
When I woke up this morning and saw that the Oscar nominations had been announced, and realized that I didn't even know it was happening or cared, it brought back an instant rush of all of those years worth of Oscar mornings.
What an absolute shame.
Like so many things in life, the pandemic was the final nail in the coffin of the Oscars, and subsequently our little get togethers. But those breakfasts had started to wane a few years before; that's part of life, having a bunch of great stuff taken away from you.
I STILL haven't even gone over to look and see what got nominated. This year will clearly include more movies that I have not seen or am interested in seeing being on the list. I'm pretty sure I haven't watched a single TV movie among this years' crop of "films" in the awards conversation, so I'm guessing the list will be filled with stuff i haven't ventured to look at, and there's no way that an "Oscar nomination" is going to motivate me there. I'm sure i'll eventually get around to scanning through a few of them, but it won't be on the level of watching a movie in a theater in any way.
Good times!
