I finally saw the Let it Be Rooftop Concert film today, at the Irvine Spectrum enormous IMAX. Perhaps my favorite movie theater experience..

of the past few years at least.

INCREDIBLE. It felt like my life was passing before my eyes or something.

This album has been a part of my entire life. I've always felt it's had an undeserved reputation as marking the breakup of The Beatles. The songs on this record are stellar, and a couple of the singles recorded during these sessions that are NOT on the album (Don't Let Me Down, one of the greatest Rock/Pop Songs i've ever heard), are just uniformly great.

I've owned a VHS copy of the original Let It Be film for decades. I've always been fascinated by it; I've talked about what Disney has done with the material many times on here, so I won't rehash that.

But I will say, seeing the rooftop footage in full at the IMAX was an incredible experience that I will never forget. The band is just so powerful. Talk about knowing what you're doing, my goodness these guys were just brilliant together.

I was so impressed with the sound at this. You really hear the suppleness of Paul's bass playing; I mean, the bottom in this thing is strong as an ox. And it's just so wonderful watching the guys PERFORM, even if it's basically just for friends up on that roof, and the rest is just their songcraft and the imaginations of those below down on the street.

I was just gobsmacked by this. It really hit my sweet spot, hit me right where I live. The footage is so good, the sound is superb, great art by some of the greatest musical artists of the 20th Century. It just kills. EVERYBODY in the theater stayed until the film was completely done and the lights came up, and they gave the screening a nice round of applause. It just bowled everybody over.

I could talk about this forever, so I'll go ahead and stop for now. The movie has me thinking so much about the songs. I know one of the things that I've spent my whole life thinking about, is that bridge in Don't Let Me Down; John ended his marriage to Cynthia in the worst way, she came home from a vacation to find Yoko with John in her house. I believe that was about a year or so before this rooftop concert, and i think that John and Yoko would marry a little later in 1969 (the rooftop gig is early in 69).

In that song, the start of the bridge, Lennon famously sings: "I'm in love for the first time, don't you know it's gonna last"....  Great song. Anyway, those lyrics. Poor Cynthia. And watching the performance again today, it really hits you on many different levels. Lennon's song writing was so personal, so direct (HELP! I Need somebody! Mother; you had me, i never had you! And on and on), and the lyrics just hit you like a sledgehammer. What a great artist. A lousy guy, a great artist. The performance of that song is just so HUGE, so groovy to see the band completely committed to the performance. And both Get Back and One After 909 swing completely. Oh my.

Will I see a film in 2022 in a theater that I ENJOY more than this? I'm not going to hold my breath.

I guess tomorrow is the last day this is playing, at 2:00 pm in Socal. It's short, you could run home and only miss the beginning of the game. Maybe on the East Coast you can catch it and get home with time to spare. But whatever you do, don't miss this.

It's total bliss.
