Yeah it's kind of empty hype, but can (in a limited sense) give an idea of how a film will be received critically/commercially (sometimes)

i.e. You could tell Netflix's titles were not going to go anywhere last season when WHITE NOISE only did 4-5 minutes.  PANS LABYRINTH was one of the best received titles ever at Cannes and (for the film it was) was a huge smash.

You just have to keep in the back of your head that Cannes/Venice/etc crowds are easily swayed by things like filmmaker history, where the filmmaker is from (i.e. French filmmakers are going to be supported at Cannes,  Italian filmmakers are going to be heavily supported at Venice, etc) etc.

cannes seems to be pretty liberal with it's 11 minute ovations dennkenn May 20, 09:54

Cannes always overly-enthusiastic about French filmmakers (see: Titane) Homecourt advantage kind of deal. {nm} notfabio May 20, 10:20

Titane of course actually was critically well received, just it also was far from a commercial kind of film. {nm} notfabio May 20, 10:22

Won the Palme D'Or... didn't even get noninated for an Oscar {nm} TheWeekendWarrior May 20, 11:45

Ovation Watch is just the trades way of having their own version of horse-race political polls to create "news" {nm} wow platinum May 20, 10:24

TOP GUN: MAVERICK is an example of a huge box office hit that was only lukewarmly received at Cannes on the flip side. {nm} notfabio May 20, 10:35

Do people realize that most of the audiences at those premieres are involved with making the movies they're applauding? {nm} TheWeekendWarrior May 20, 10:43

Depends. Obviously Studio Premieres are 90% planted folks with direct financial incentive to applaud. Vs Festival that is usually 5-10% {nm} notfabio May 20, 10:49

Obviously some of the smaller festivals are likely skewed too. But Cannes/Venice should not be (at least for US films) {nm} notfabio May 20, 10:50

Dial of Destiny got a standing ovation at Cannes. Is that 'nuff said about the relevance of standing ovations? {nm} terraformingearth May 20, 11:12

Basically even if your film is C+ C- material, you tend to at least get a 4-5 minute ovation (DIAL got 5 minutes) as a courtesy. {nm} notfabio May 20, 11:15

Not to me, because that is not what's typically looked at closely at that Festival. Big commercial releases are icing at Cannes not the cake {nm} goodvibe61 May 20, 11:19
