I don't fault Netflix for the business decisions of hiking prices and splitting the DVDbymail off from Streaming, but the tone-deaf blog
post was what really got my goat. The apology wasn't an apology- he said he made a mistake, but what he recognizes as the mistake wasn't even a "mistake" that people were taking them to task for. The whole "lack of humility" and "arrogance" with which they announced the price hikes? What? No, people were pissed that they got charged more without seeing a commensurate increase in service. They found themselves paying 20-60% more for the same thing. Which, again, fine, it's a business decision.
And then, as way of "explaining" the mistake they made by being "arrogant" and glossing over what was the main issue of a price hike, he went on to plop down some convoluted new plan to split off the company, making it sound like he was saying "look, we screwed up by being arrogant in our announcments a few months ago. so to fix our arrogance, we're going to separate the DVDs from the streaming and make it so that there is no crossover between the two, website-wise, queue-wise, billing-wise. See how that solves the problem of us not having humility in our announcements?" Like I said, tone-deaf.
I think its likely they will sell Qwikster off in a year or so. Thats why they are splitting them {nm} Sep 20, 07:53
