You're thinking too locally and "modern". Every generation has a Neil Armstrong. History is littered with inspirational people.
The fact that he was the first man on the moon is is but one of his calling cards. There will be a first man on Mars, on a moon of Jupiter or Saturn, on a planet in another solar system.
Being "First!" doesn't make one great - it's everything else. Neil was an inspiration BEYOND that accomplishment. But so have many others throughout history. They transcended what made them famous in the first place, is my point.
