A 10 year deal for Roger Clemens after his age 25 season would've been questioned when he was around 30, as he had some injuries and
had some less than stellar years. But he would've had enough outstanding years by the time he turned 35 to justify the length and price of the deal.
Maddux is just a different animal altogether. He was never max-effort and that probably played a big part in his durability.
As for Kershaw getting 300 over 8-10 years...if the Dodgers can afford it (and the incoming revenue from broadcast rights and their own cable channel indicate that they probably can), it's probably worth it. He's probably/possibly got 3-5 more "peak" years before he hits 30. He's shown that he can learn to be a pitcher rather than just a thrower as indicated by his steadily improving BB/9 ratio; this should translate to him being able to adjust when his velocity starts to diminish.
30 mil per year for the top players is no longer so outlandish, and in 5 years, it will be even less so.
