People misunderstand that play. If you are upset with Kolten, you have it wrong. Instead, you should be happy for the Boston scouts.

As a former baseball player, your scouting report includes the most miniscule details about every pitcher's pitches/tendencies/delivery, every batter's stance/tendencies/swing, and every baserunner's speed/tendencies/lead.

In this case, some scout noticed that every time Kolten lead off, he places his feet together and takes a large step, which is a big no-no (for the very reason you saw). In that position, you don't have the balance under you to make a quick change in direction for that very small time when your feet are together, allowing a pitcher to pick you off.

Someone on the Boston scout team saw this, mentioned it to a coach, and they put it in their gameplan. Gauranteed. We did this all the time, and I only played DIII baseball.

What is more: it won't happen again. These types of things you only get to try once. Kolten will learn from the mistake and will change his lead-off from now on.

Kudos to the Boston team.

Really? Picked Off At 1st Base With The Big Guy At The Plate. Really - Isn't Base-Running Your Specialty. RotoHockeyYTD2013 Oct 27, 20:57

Obstruction ! no? Pushing your teammate into the line? No .Oh yes...a fight between an Islander and a Flyer. That's the ticket {nm} mrbinns Oct 28, 06:17

No, he's a rookie 2B prospect who's specialty are hitting and fielding. {nm} Antibody Oct 28, 08:58

Uh no.. From a St Louis person they put him in for running speed. But he's a rookie who probably shouldn't have been on a WS roster {nm} JDolphin Oct 28, 12:32

oops hit enter instead of tab - he's definitely not there for the hitting and Kozma is better fielder. One of our youngsters was bound to JDolphin Oct 28, 12:35

Because Allen Craig has been hampered by injury. Wong is not known for his SBs. He was drafted for his hitting. {nm} Antibody Oct 28, 12:39

STL did not need a SB - they just needed a fast Base Runner, just like JDolphin (and Mike Matheny) said. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2013 Oct 28, 12:49

He is faster than an injured Craig but that doesn't make base-running his specialty. {nm} Antibody Oct 28, 12:52

It supposedly was for the Bottom of the 9th - that's why Mike Matheny put him in there. RotoHockeyYTD2013 Oct 28, 13:07

Again, because Wong runs faster than the injured Craig. He made a rookie mistake, simply as that. {nm} Antibody Oct 28, 13:14

...and in the end, the highest rated show last night was the Redskins-Broncos overrun at 7PM. NFL beat the WS in 18-49 share. mrbinns Oct 28, 13:32

And unlike Kolten Wong, Peyton Manning being Picked-Off didn't cost them the game. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2013 Oct 28, 13:44

He may have been drafted for his hitting (which is crap this season) but that's not why he's on the WS roster. He's on the roster as a JDolphin Oct 28, 15:35
