I believe in the US, there is a separation of church and state. So what the church does should not effect what the state does. The main reason why married couples are confered special status is that in a heterosexual marriage children are produced. Since the state wants the children to be look after by the parents, they allow for the fact that at least one of the people in the marriage will spent some of their time to take care of the children, and thus cannot earn the same salary as the other.
By definition, homosexuals don't have children. If for some reason they are granted custody of a child, then any benefits should be given to the child, not the homosexual couple.

Gays and women would probably share the same showers and locker room with no discomfort on both sides.

It's not a question of being violated. If a man used the same shower as the women in the team, he will not violate the women either, unless he's a rapist. However, being a heterosexual man, he can't help but be aroused. Would the women be comfortable showering in that situation? This is the same for a homosexual man in a men's shower, no?
