RazorHawk's Music For The Week (8/8/16) - Movie Music Cues
Posted by: RazorHawk on Aug 08, 22:01
In movie music (scores) there are 'themes' and there are 'cues'.
Themes are generally music written to represent a movie as a whole and/or each character in general. The theme helps set the tone and pace for the movie (and is usually played at the beginning of the movie over the title credits).
The Star Wars Theme, The Indiana Jones Theme, The Jaws Theme are some of the most famous movie themes of all time (and all written by the same person).
In Star Wars, for example, there is the main Star Wars Theme, but the composer also wrote a theme for each main character. Darth Vader has his own theme (The Imperial March) and so do Luke And Leia Theme.
During a movie, the characters might be in different kinds of scenes that need different kinds of music (action scenes, romantic scenes, comedy scenes, etc). The purpose of a theme is to represent the movie and/or a character in general and then the composer makes "music cues" (smaller, edited pieces of music taken from the theme that change the instrumentation or tempo or style to fit particular scenes).
Here is the Luke And Leia Theme again. This was likely written even before the composer had even seen the movie for the first time. Then when it came time to score the movie he used the theme to create music cues and if you listen in the background of these two music cues you can hear different arrangements of the theme:
"The Force Is Strong In My Family" and "He Is My Brother"
For this episode, I would like to share some Movie Music Cues that I really like.
Luke And Leia Theme is one of my favorites.
Here is the complete version (link)
"I Will Return" from Furious 7
Here is a piano version (that is similar to what is heard in the movie) (link)
Here is the actual scene from the movie with I Will Return playing in the background (link)
On the soundtrack, it is called "I Will Return" by Skylar Grey (and has lyrics) (link)
"Harry And Grace Make Peace" from Armageddon
Here is the actual scene from the movie with Harry And Grace Make Peace playing in the background (link)
Here is the same scene from the movie where somebody has taken away the dialogue and overdubbed the music cue over the scene (link)
"Harry And Grace Make Peace" is available on the Armageddon Soundtrack.
"Memories" from Top Gun
Here is the actual scene from the movie featuring Memories playing in the background (link)
Here is the version of Memories that is availabe on the Top Gun Soundtrack Special Expanded Edition (link)
"Going Green" from Twister
Here is the actual scene from the movie featuring Going Green playing in the background (link) (theme plays 1:19 - 1:52)
The score for Twister was actually made up of music cues and for the Score Recording the composer combined the various cues to make song length music selections. Here is the full length version of Going Green as it appears on the score album (link)
"TURBO" from Turbo
I cannot find any footage of where this music cue appears in the movie but I really like it.
Here is how it appears on the Turbo Soundtrack (link)
These are just a few of the movie music cues that I like and wanted to share with other people who might be interested. There are many many good ones to highlight, but I purposely stayed away from the most popular and most well known. I plan to make another post sometime in the future with more movie music cues and maybe I will include some of them then.
