I don't think it's so much nefarious - the NYT article went out of its way to say that writing the loss off against future income was legal

Posted by: RogerMore on Oct 04, 17:06 in response to MattW's post Sure, but most of the commentary is trying to make it...

though obviously other commenters will have their spin.

But I think it highlights the inequality in the system - most people don't have $900 milion to lose in the first place, and then someone who does is able to earn $900 million without paying federal income tax?  And this is the person who says he is going to change the system?  Those are the questions being asked.  (As well as ratcheting up the pressure for him to release the returns, and the speculation about what is in them)

have you paid at least $1 in federal income tax since 1995? you likely have paid more than Donaldo {nm} slipping jimmy Oct 03, 16:39

Trump's 1995 return shows good tax policy at work MattW Oct 03, 21:17

$916 million in losses makes him a lousy businessman. {nm} Antibody Oct 04, 09:55

That's a separate issue. Paying taxes based on gains and losses over many years like every other organization existence is 100% acceptable {nm} MattW Oct 04, 10:55

It's still terrible optics, and not something a candidate wants to have to explain. "The reason I didn't pay taxes is because I lost a lot RogerMore Oct 04, 13:18

Sure, but most of the commentary is trying to make it seem like he's been doing something nefarious with his taxes which is simply false MattW Oct 04, 15:09

If there's nothing nefarious. then why doesn't he just release his tax returns. {nm} Antibody Oct 04, 16:13

he should, but we havent exactly done a great job understanding them so far. Like Matt says, theres a lot to be critical of DT about Moviesnob Oct 04, 16:16

IDK, some of the taxes in regards to his foundation and charity could be illegal. {nm} Antibody Oct 04, 16:36

Like moviesnob said there certainly might be something terrible in there, this most definitely isn't it. {nm} MattW Oct 04, 17:05

That writer is the author of a book she is shilling: "The Up Side of Down: Why Failing Well Is the Key to Successâ so no bias there. {nm} BSmurf Oct 04, 10:45

Ideas shouldn't be dismissed based on who's talking. {nm} MattW Oct 04, 11:00

But they should be put in context when the talker has a vested financial interest in what they are saying. That's what disclosure rules are BSmurf Oct 04, 11:35

No laws broken and perfectly legal. More worried about HRC and MY taxes 2017+ not DJT in 95 {nm} DanU Oct 04, 13:55

President doesn't pass tax law. Congress does. HRC can say whatever she wants - doesn't mean she'll get it {nm} BSmurf Oct 04, 17:15
