The 1st season was so perfect at revealing the mystery, that the feeling i get from season 2 premiere is probably wrong: that this is actually michaels bad place? initially doomed with the boredom of his work, then given a chance at greatness, only to fail over and over.

or, maybe its a in between place where eleanoar, chidi et al, have a chance to redeem themselves and move on to the actual good place, and as long as they keep improving each time, eventaully they will move on. (they did seem to retain some basic memories of the 1st attempt, so maybe they learn and grow a little each time)
