reads the newspaper.

Websites like Google and FB can personalise so that, say, women can see content and men don't, or people living in an area defined by the advertiser are targeted with an ad and people outside that place are not.Ā  There are advantages for advertisers in doing this - their ads are seen by people who are more likely to be interested, and less likely to bother people who aren't - but there are downsides too. We may be OK with, say, a retail store doing this, but are we comfortable with political parties and interest groups using the same strategy? And Google/FB have less incentive to think about this because they're collecting $ from advertisers, whether they're retailers or political.

And webstites are also more active and wilder in recommending more content for users. Like a newspaper's front page will have "turn to sports, page 45". Youtube is "You liked that cat video? Then you'll love this one about anti-vax conspiracy theories".
