Last Friday, a technician noticed that his monitor was remotely accessed in the morning briefly. This happens from time to time as supervisors have access this way. A few hours later, his monitor was accessed again and his mouse taken over. The hacker then proceeded to change the levels of lye in the water for public use. The tech imediately changed the settings back once the hack was over so the public was never in danger. He reported the incident and authorities were notified.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office as well as Federal law enforcement are now investigating.
According to the mayor and city manager, there are sufficient redundancies in the systems to keep the public safe even in the event that the tech did not see the hack and fix the settings.
