Indeed. You can have 99% of the shares held long and it goes down a few dollars because the long ones were bought before the IPO was over.
It's just too difficult to predict. Also, you have the issue of even when an IPO number is reached and the stock starts moving, it still takes tons and tons of shares to move the stock in the first few hours at least. I haven't figured out exactly how that works, but the first dollar or 1.50 goes fast, but then no matter how many shares are bought, it's just going up a cent here or a cent there until the game (seemingly arbitrarily) decides it's going to start moving big again if people buy. This happens with other stocks, too, but not nearly to the extent of IPOs. It's just too frustrating and I think that the fact that you don't know how much the stock is going to move even if you somehow knew exactly how many shares were going to be bought is odd, though I'm sure there are reasons for it (probably to prevent huge swings.)

The way I see it, the point of limiting shares was to create a demand to buy a stock at IPO price rather than a higher price. Feb 19, 09:00
