The critical part that reset plays is that other following see the movement and "jump on the bandwagon" thinking there's some real reason
for the price movement. The traders don't get that same herd movement without the "today's change" getting reset to zero.
Personally I have suggested changing the "today's change" to a rolling "last 24 hours change" display. I'm sure that would reduce the reset trading issue to something negligible and give players a more accuracte measurement of recent trends.
