The Closet is a stylized comedy about one man's reversal of fortune. The French production stars Daniel Auteuil, Gerard Depardieu, Thierry Lhermitte, and Michele Laroque. Auteuil plays a man on the verge of losing his job while dealing with personal issues. He is still in love with his ex-wife and misses his son and is upset that life is not going the way he planned. His life becomes even more complicated when he pretends to be gay so that his boss would be afraid to fire him due to fears of discrimination.
The Closet opened in France January 2001 and has become a box-office smash. It is directed and written by Francis Veber and produced by Alain Poire. Miramax will release the picture stateside Summer 2001.
