The great 19th-century Russian novelist Dostoevsky makes the big screen, though in a twisted comedic way. As the title suggests, Crime and Punishment in Suburbia will not be a completely faithful rendering of the novelist's great tale of sin and redemption. Instead of the poor Russian college student Raskolnikov trying to justify the murder of an old battleaxe, we have here, in director Rob Schmidt's modern version, an American teenage girl, playfully named Roseanne Skolnik, conspiring with her boyfriend to murder her abusive stepfather. Ellen Barkin stars as the mother of the teenage girl, who is played by Monica Keena. James DeBello and Vincent Kartheiser play rivals for Keena's affection.
