Richard Gere stars in the sci-fi film The Mothman Prophecies as a reporter who leaves his job after his wife's death. He pursues a series of strange events in a small town that leads to signs of a possible alien visitation. Mark Pellington (Arlington Road) directs the film co-starring Laura Linney (The Truman Show).

The film is based on John A. Keel's UFO investigation around Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the 1960's. During that time, people in the town experienced unexplainable phenomenons such as psychic visions and the appearance of flying creatures.
