Our Lady of the Assassins is based on a Spanish novel by Fernando Vallejo who also debuts as a screenwriter. The story is about a gay Columbian writer who returns to his village and falls in love with a young gang member. The gang member works as an assassin and the writer is introduced to the crime world of Medellin, Columbia. The story is set in the time when the Medellin drug-cartel practically ran the daily lives of the city's inhabitants.
The film is directed by Barbet Schroeder and stars German Jaramillo, Anderson Ballesteros, Juan David Restrepos, Manuel Busquets, and a cameo by Schroeder. The Paramount Classics film was shown at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and also screened at the 2000 Telluride Film Festival. It has already garnered the Italian Senate's Gold Medal at the 2000 Venice Film Festival.
