Exceeding even the most optimistic forecast, the R-rated comedy Neighbors [NEIBR] grossed an estimated $51.1 million to lead the weekend box office. 53% of the audience were over the age of 25 and a surprising majority 53% were female, indicating the draw of Zac Efron.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [SPID5] stumbled 59% from the top spot to $37.2 million. The webcrawler has netted $147.9 million.
The Other Woman [OTHRW] finished third with $9.3 million, bringing its total to $61.7 million. Heaven is for Real [HVNFR] followed in fourth with $7 million to reach $74.2 million.
Two other new wide releases failed to make a dent. Moms' Night Out [MOMNO] debuted in seventh place at $4.2 million. Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return [DOFOZ] bombed with just $3.7million to open eighth.
