Three new films open on the Presidents Day holiday weekend, but none shall knock off The LEGO Batman Movie [LBATM] from its perch. The animated family film could pile up another $42.0 million over the 4-day period.
With Valentine’s Day falling this past Tuesday, Fifty Shades Darker [50SH2] will enjoy better legs than Fifty Shades of Grey, which was fronloaded by the combination of Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day on the same weekend two years ago. Fifty Shades Darker could steam up $21.0 million through Monday.
Ice Cube [ICUBE] and Charlie Day [CDAY] square off in Fist Fight [FISTF]. The R-rated comedy face little competition for its target audience. Booked in 3185 theaters, Fist Fight may hit $20 million over the long weekend.
Matt Damon [MDAMO] toplines the PG-13 rated fantasy The Great Wall [GRTWL] set in ancient China. Moviegoers and critics seem unsure of what to make of this strange amalgam of Eastern and Western filmmaking. Reviews have been mostly negative. Showing in 3326 theaters, The Great Wall may scale $19.0 million over the holiday weekend.
John Wick: Chapter 2 [WICK2] was likely to be frontloaded by its male action fans. The sequel looks to score another $17 million in its second weekend.
Dane DeHaan [DDEHA] does his best Leonardo DiCaprio imitation in the psychological thriller A Cure for Wellness [ACFWL]. Paramount has generated little buzz for the R-rated film. A Cure for Wellness may earn just $10 million from 2704 theaters.
