The nominees for the 90th Academy Awards were announced earlier today. The Shape of Water led the way with 13 nominations. The Hollywood Stock Exchange offered NominOptions for the leading contenders in the top eight categories and HSX traders collectively predicted 84% of this year’s Oscar nominees. Here's how each category broke down.
Best Picture named 9 nominees this year: Call Me By Your Name [N8PCMB], Darkest Hour [N8PDHR], Dunkirk [N8PDUN], Get Out [N8PGET], Lady Bird [N8PLAD], Phantom Thread [N8PPTH], The Post [N8PTPO], The Shape of Water [N8PTSW] and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri [N8P3BO]. HSX predicted 8, leaving out Phantom Thread for The Florida Project.
The Best Director nominees were Christopher Nolan – Dunkirk [N8DCNO], Greta Gerwig – Lady Bird [N8DGGE], Guillermo Del Toro – The Shape of Water [N8DGDT], Jordan Peele – Get Out [N8DJPE] and Paul Thomas Anderson – Phantom Thread [N8PPTA]. HSX picked 4 out of 5, favoring Martin McDonagh – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri instead of Paul Thomas Anderson.
The Best Actor nominees were Daniel Day-Lewis – Phantom Thread [N8ADDL], Daniel Kaluuya – Get Out [N8ADKA], Denzel Washington – Roman J. Israel, Esq. [N8ADWA], Gary Oldman – Darkest Hour [N8AGOL] and Tomothee Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name [N68ATCH]. HSX went 4 out of 5, missing Denzel Washington with James Franco – The Disaster Artist.
The Best Actress nominees were Frances McDormand – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri [N8CFMC], Margot Robbie – I, Tonya [N8CMRO], Meryl Streep – The Post [N8CMST], Sally Hawkins – The Shape of Water [N8CSHA], and Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird [N8CSRO]. HSX was perfect 5 for 5.
The Best Supporting Actor nominees were Christopher Plummer – All the Money in the World [N8RCPL], Richard Jenkins – The Shape of Water [N8RRJE], Sam Rockwell – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri [N8RSRO], Willem Dafoe – The Florida Project [N8RWDA], Woody Harrelson – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri [N8RWHA]. HSX got 4 out of 5, picking Armie Hammer - Call Me By Your Name over Woody Harrelson.
The Best Supporting Actress nominees were Alison Janney – I, Tonya [N8SAJA], Laurie Metcalf – Lady Bird [N8SLME], Lesley Manville – Phantom Thread [N8SLMA], Mary J. Blige – Mudbound [N8SMJB] and Octavia Spencer – The Shape of Water [N8SOSP]. HSX was once again 4 for 5, snubbing Lesley Manville with Holly Hunter – The Big Sick.
The Best Adapted Screenplay nominees were Call Me By Your Name [N8ECMB], Logan [N8ELOG], Molly’s Game [N8EMOL], Mudbound [N8EMUD] and The Disaster Artist [N8ETDA]. HSX picked 4 out 5, missing Logan with Wonder.
The Best Original Screenplay nominees were Get Out [N8OGET], Lady Bird [N8OLAD], The Big Sick [N8OTBS], The Shape of Water [N8OTSW] and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri [N8O3BO]. HSX chose 4 for 5, favoring Dunkirk slightly over The Big Sick.
