For the first time in six weeks, a different film is atop the weekend box office as Pacific Rim: Uprising [PACR2] opened with an estimated $28.0 million. While down from the first Pacific Rim, the performance was better than the studio forecast. The audience was 63% male and 53% over the age of 25.
Dethroned, Black Panther [BPNTH.BW] finished second with $16.7 million. Its total of $630.9 million ranks the highest of any superhero film, and the fifth largest of any film.
I Can Only Imagine [ICOIM] remained at the third spot with $13.8 million, off just 19% from its opening. The faith-based film has already amassed $38.3 million.
Sherlock Gnomes [GNOM2] debuted with $10.6 million for fourth overall, down significantly from Gnomeo & Juliet.
Tomb Raider [TOMB3] tumbled 56% in its second weekend to $10.4 million and fifth place.
Down 34% in its sophomore frame, Love, Simon [SVHSA] finished seventh at $7.8 million. The teen comedy has earned $23.7 million.
Paul, Apostle of Christ [PAOCH] opened at the eighth spot with $5.0 million.
Midnight Sun [MDNTS] took in $4.1 million to debut tenth. The romance skewed 80% female and 66% under 25 as expected.
Unsane [UNSAN] opened with $3.9 million for eleventh place.
