Moviegoers openly embraced the end of the world as the disaster film 2012 [2012S] swept up an estimated $65 million in its debut.  Roland Emmerich [REMME] delivered the digital mayhem audiences have come to expect from the director of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow.  The Sony film tapped into people's fascination with apocalyptic prophecies tied to the Mayan calendar.

A Christmas Carol [CAROL] enjoyed a strong hold, tailing off just 26% from its opening weekend.  The CG...

Knowing they're now too old to still be playing the perpetual man-childs (man-children?), Adam Sandler [ASAND], Chris Rock [CROCK], Kevin James [KJAME], David Spade [DSPAD] and Rob Schneider [RSCHN] have decided to be Grown Ups [GRWUP].  Unfortunately, five comedians in one film does not mean five times the laughs.  Maturity seems to have suck the funny out of their bones as evident in the trailer for what looks to be a bland and generic comedy.

The master of disaster films, director Roland Emmerich [REMME] is back with another doomsday scenario to destroy the world.  Inspired by the end date of the Mayan calendar, 2012 [2012S] chronicles a chain of natural disasters worldwide that is about to end humankind.   The PG-13 rated film employs the usual formula of focusing on one believer trying to save his family, here headed by John Cusack [JOHNC], as everyone else falls by the wayside.  Who cares about the billions of other lives? ...

Why does every romantic comedy trailer insist on showing you the whole movie?  Leap Year [LEPYR] is no exception.  Amy Adams [AMADA] plays a woman who travels to Ireland in order to propose to her non-committal boyfriend on February 29th, when by Irish tradition he must accept.   If that flimsy set up is the story, then why end the trailer with the boyfriend proposing to her?   We already know she's gonna end up with Matthew Goode [MTGOO], the guy she's been fighting cute with for the...

Many contest the true nature of the Mayan prophecy pertaining to the year 2012, but that hasn’t kept Hollywood from using it as an excuse to destroy the planet.  Director Roland Emmerich [REMME], best known for previously destroying the planet in Independence Day and in The Day After Tomorrow once again heaps fear and destruction upon mankind.  Will the masses go for it?

Be they true or not, 2012 presents us with a plethora of eccentric prophecies and beliefs about the end of the world. ...

CBS Films was launched by Les Moonves, the CEO of CBS Corp., as a new pipeline of content for their pay cable channel Showtime.   Ironically, their first release Extraordinary Measures [XMEAS] has the feel of a made-for-TV movie.  Brendan Fraser [BFRAS] plays the real-life John Crowley, who teams up with a doctor played by Harrison Ford [HFORD], to find a cure for his daughter's terminal disease.   You know a feel good storyline is being driven home, when they pump up the music from Creed...

One would expect something more high-brow and intelligent from a comedy starring Steve Carell [SCARE] and Tina Fey [TFEY], but then again, Date Night [DATEN] is directed by Shawn Levy [SLEVY].  Instead, Date Night turns out to be a married couple wannabe version of The Hangover.  I suppose emulating the highest grossing R-rated comedy ever is fine, as long as they aim for the R-rating.

The teaser trailer for Warner Bros.' remake Clash of the Titans [CLASH] has been unsheathed.  Sam Worthington [SWORT] stars as Perseus in a dark and grittier version of the 1981 original, whose stop motion effects have been updated with the latest CG effects.   The heavy-pounding progressive metal as the trailer music seems to drive in the point that there will be wall to wall action.

Moviegoers played scrooge at the weekend box office as A Christmas Carol [CAROL] open to a less than expected $31 million.  Six weeks before Christmas proved a tad early for the CG animated adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic story. However, A Christmas Carol should hold up well at the box office as the holidays approach and folks get into the Christmas spirit.  Robert Zemeckis' [RZEME] similar themed The Polar Express debuted with $23 million in November, 2004, but finished its first...
