As this weekend’s holiday approaches, the nation gets ready to celebrate with barbecues, picnics and fireworks. Hollywood always has special plans for the country every 4th of July. I have watched aliens blow up the White House in Independence Day and seen Tom Cruise protect his family from them in War of the Worlds. Transformers stormed the country, Peter Parker went on his second adventure in Spider-Man 2 and Will Smith had to cope with being a superhero in last year’s Hancock.

The Sony CG animated film Planet 51 [PLT51] finds an astronaut, voiced by Dwayne Johnson [TROCK], who crash lands on another world, and meets a young alien who hides him from the authorities. It's basically E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial in reverse. I'm still waiting for the explanation why the green aliens of Planet 51 live and act just like humans do on Earth.
Sony's new CG animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs [CWCMB] is based a popular children's book. Bill Hader [BHADE] voices the inventor who solves the food shortage crisis with a machine that makes the sky rain food. Anna Faris [AFARI] voices a weatherwoman covering the phenomenon. Though where are the sushi, foie gras, chicken tikka masala, mu shu pork...? I mean, that's the food I would want rather than the generic cafeteria food served here.
The Universal comedy Couples Retreat [CPLRT] stars Vince Vaughn [VVAUG], Jon Favreau [JFAVR] and Jason Batman [JBATE] as husbands who embark on a vacation at a tropical resort where they learn couples thearpy are mandatory part of the package deal. The Heartbreak Kid's Malin Akerman [MAKER] and Forgetting Sarah Marshall's Kristen Bell [KBELL] seemingly reprise their roles from those vacation films.

The singing rodents find love as the Chipmunks meet the Chipettes for the first time in the teaser for The Squeakuel [ALVN2]. How convenient that Alvin, Simon and Theodore each have a female counterpart that's exactly like themselves, except with makeup.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen [TFRM2] totaled a huge $109.0 million during the weekend, on top of the $91.1 million already banked on Wednesday and Thursday. The five day sum of $200 million fell just short of the record $203.8 million set by The Dark Knight’s first five days. After seeing the toys realized on screen as giant robots in the first film, moviegoers came back for more Autobots on Decepticons action as directed by Michael Bay [MBAY]. Despite poor critical reviews, the...
Hilary Swank [HSWAN] stars in Amelia [AMELA], a straight-up biopic of the world's most famous female aviator. Ameila Earhart went missing in 1937 during her attempted flight to circumnagivate the globe. Amy Adams also played her in this summer's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
A human works with vampires to maintain a steady blood supply in Daybreakers [DAYBR]. Etahn Hawke [EHAWK], Willem Dafoe [WDAFO] and Sam Neill [SNEIL] star in the new thriller which seems borrow elements from Blade, I Am Legend and Ultraviolet.
Director Richard Kelly [RKELL] pays the bills with his first studio film, The Box [THBOX]. Cameron Diaz [CDIAZ] and James Marsden [JMARS] play a couple who gets an offer for a million dollar, if they push a button that will also kill someone they don't know. The Richard Matheson story was also adapted into an episode of Twilight Zone.
