It's meant to level the playing field. This way a player with a million dollar port isn't able to buy a huge number of shares and
so effect the price too much. The limit used to be 50,000 (up to a few months ago) but there's so much money in the market now that the limit was increase.
Historical fact...originally the share limit was based on phase, something like 12,500 shares at IPO up to 50,000 at release.
