I always get stuck thinking "Spend 40k to free up 2x260k?" and then I get hesitant to mess with said well-chosen short.
If it's been a sharp decline and breaks through a previous year-low I am more inclined to exit my position... but my decisions have been highly subjective and I was wondering what objective rules others set for themselves.
I like your order of actions set forth in paragraph 2 and I'll have to come up with one that works best for my port.

I do something similar with >half my port but solely in the H$8-H$40 range because instead of pennies it can be dimes and if news breaks it (hopefully) won't be up $4 before you see it. The jury is still out.
