You are not representing the situation accurately. Shorting and selling will go through just fine if the stock price changes

In HSX, MAX means shares available not affordable. So you need to know how much you can afford if you want the trade to go thru the 1st time

Not right, "Buy Max" does mean "buy the maximum you can afford at this moment before orders are executed" (further inside)

I think it would take a HUGE price diff for that to happen, I've had trades go thru that cost $10K+ more than I had in cash.

Happens all the time for me. SOMETIMES it will let me go negative, but OFTEN it just fails.
