I know I'm risking the ire of a lot of players bringing this up, I do still remember the opposition to the proposal a while back to penalize inactive accounts. Heck, I was one of the protesters because I thought the inactivity period suggested was too short and the penalty too harsh. But there really are a LOT of dead accounts. As I've been slowly crawling my way up the ranks every once in a while I take a look at the profiles of the players listed around me in the LTD listing. Even now, when I'm almost at the 95% zone only somewhere around 30% of the players of similar portfolio size have traded in the last six months. The majority haven't traded in so long that there isn't even a date for their last trade (and since I've seen some who's last trade is a year and a half ago, that's a LONG time ago).
So I'd like to throw out an idea for discussion. I still think that penalizing inactive accounts is too much. Players do sometimes come back after long periods of inactivity and I don't think its right for them to come back to massive negative cash balances. But at the same time IMHO its also a little unfair to the active players for accounts that have been dead for years to still be listed in the various rankings.
My suggestion is that accounts inactive for six months or more not be listed in the rankings and that they be removed without prejudice from any leagues they are in (that is, they can re-apply for them if the account becomes active again, not like when the league admin removes them and re-applying isn't even possible). Account activity can be a trade, a forum post or playing any of the Earn H$ games, just something to indicate the player is at least logging in and participating in some manner.
Thoughts? Maybe six months is still too short and nine or twelve months would be better. Or maybe the original three months (IIRC) is what people want. Maybe you have to actually trade to remain "active". I dunno but I'd like to hear what others think.
I also realize that even if we come to some kind of consesus on this it would have to be approved by Antibody since he's the one who would have to do the actual programming to implement it. And maybe this will go nowhere. *shrug* I just thought that enough time has passed since the original suggestion that it might be worth talking about again, hopefully a little more calmly this time. :)
