2 examples from the past that would haver required use of Wide Release date, if the current system were in effect..CHCGO and MBFGW

Posted by: mrbinns on Dec 05, 21:48 in response to Antibody's post That's a good question. First 12 weekends means from...

CHCGO released limited on 12/27/2002.  It went wide on 2/7/03  (7th week) and would have looked good for a BW about a week  or 2 later.   Stop the clock on the 12th week from 12/27 or from 2/7??  After the 12th weekend it was at 124.85     After 12 wide weekends  it was at 163.50

The exception to EVERY rule was MBFGW.  At the time, it delisted before going wide.  It went wide, barely, in week 16 and by about the 4th weekend of wide release, it was heading for 100M.  After 12 wide weeks, 169.29

At the time, there was a general feeling of Shhesh, why can't we have some action based upon the success of this little movie.   Had the current system been in place, a strike could have been set and a MBFGW.BW would have had a few weeks of life.  We may never see another movie act like this one, or there could be a sleeper hit next summer.  You never know.

I do not know what other regulars feel, but since HSX usually ignores the limited release date for all calculations once a movie goes wide, I do not see why this is different.  Most detail pages do not even show the limited dates (Example:  MISS4 which adjusted 2.7 plus previous, not 3.0 )

And that is why the words "Wide Release" should be in the definition, or at leaset follow normal protocol with ABE and change the release date to the date of Wide Release which is the way it has been done for all other movies.

Question about ABE.BW - 12 weeks from limited release, or 12 weeks from wide release? shwuck Dec 05, 08:56

What is Lincoln's release date listed on the movie stock page? RazorHawk Dec 05, 10:57

11/9 - Limited, 11/16 - Wide as posted on the stock page {nm} shwuck Dec 05, 11:53

Sorry, I meant to say - both are listed, thus the confusion. Either could be a correct interpretation {nm} shwuck Dec 05, 11:56

that is your problem... when I look at the stock page it says " Release Date: Nov 16, 2012" RazorHawk Dec 05, 13:52

The BW says " is set for 12 weekends of box office. " No mention of Release Date. {nm} Antibody Dec 05, 14:38

That's a good question. First 12 weekends means from limited release. Arguments could be made both ways, but I'm inclined to keep it Antibody Dec 05, 14:38

Thank you for your response - I learned something new. You can scrub my response below then. {nm} JDolphin Dec 05, 21:08

Yeah, you're right about MISS4.BW. Ok, I'm updating the description to 12 weekends of wide release. Antibody Dec 06, 15:41

Outstanding analysis. Well done. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2012 Dec 09, 13:13

until AB chimes in, I would say 12 weeks from the IPO date on the BW's page...not the movie stock page {nm} tealfan Dec 05, 12:26

That won't work, BWs aren't even IPO'd until after the movie has opened. {nm} DTravel Dec 05, 12:47

ah...that's right {nm} tealfan Dec 05, 13:32

this post made me nostalgic about our old friend ABBond :( I miss him and his site {nm} daveart Dec 06, 10:25

When a limited film then is released Wide, the official HSX release date is the Wide release date. Thus, ABE.BW will delist after 12 weeks BUY BONDS 19 Dec 05, 13:11

NB to Antibody...You may want to consider changing the standard wording on the definition of a .BW to include the words BUY BONDS 19 Dec 05, 13:15

The definition says " is set for 12 weekends of box office. " No mention of Release Date. {nm} Antibody Dec 05, 14:39

Feb 4 2014? {nm} DTravel Dec 05, 14:17

Use the same date used to calculate delist date, so if in doubt just add 8 weeks to the delist date {nm} JDolphin Dec 05, 14:05
