I tend to play it like Flash describes. A lot depends on how much time you have to play.
If you can and want to be constantly logged in or log in many times a day, you'll probably want to flip stocks more often than if you are only checking in once a day. Usually I only have time to play once a day, frequently on my lunch break at work, so the big ticket movies I'll usually hold and ride out the fluctuations. I'm also heavily invested in Starbonds which don't require as much attention as most movies. I posted some advice a while back based on what I've found works for my casual play style, Rocket has kindly put a link to that post in the lower levels of the PVL leagues if you want to read it.
