In this case, it's an excuse for the pretty dissappointing alien monster action/story/resolution. Not surprising that Lost forced people to defend the lack of answers/satisfactory resolution by saying "it's about the characters." If you want to make a movie about a whiny kid's problem with his dad, then do so. But don't stick an alien monter in it to try and drum up interest. And if you are going to go the monster route, then make the climax exciting and satisfying, which Super 8 doesn't.
