Movies

I was speaking with a couple of undergraduates yesterday, friends and fans of the Potter books, and they were almost furious about the film.

Given the RT reaction, and having seen it myself, their reaction surprised me.  But they were articulate about what the film passed over from the book, and baffled by what the film chose to amplify and linger upon.

I had been thinking about the performance of LRDR3 (December, I concede), in that it bested "Fellowship" and "Two Towers", as evidence that HPOT8 would also outperform the declines of the other films in the series, and I took the Monday-Tuesday weekdays to suggest it could shadow PIRT2.  So on the one hand, your suggestion about the series remaining a closed book to casual viewers plays a part; but I would wonder, too, if despite the strong positive first reaction from professional critics, HPOT8 has failed to satisfy a big geeky swath of its base: fans who will see it once but not twice.

The titles question (CBALN, SUPR8 and CAPAM) is a perenially interesting one (recall the discussion of BRDSM, and how men were considered unlikely to be willing to buy a ticket because of that awkward moment when you must say the name of your film outloud).  CAPAM is certainly not a known quantity the way BATM1, LONER, HULK, SPIDR or SUPRM are, so in this instance, I'm not sure how much the title factor factors.

Did you see the NF piece this week about the origins of CBALN in a sketch / poster?

I've seen some crazy things in my time playing this game but a 72% drop for a well-reviewed Harry Potter movie takes the cake TheWeekendWarrior Jul 24, 06:01

To be honest, I was looking at your figures all week.... VictorY Jul 24, 06:04

Thanks... Potter just evaded me completely but I did know that Captain America was going to do better than tracking. TheWeekendWarrior Jul 24, 06:12

You were so right, in fact, you were the closest to "Captain," among the ones I read... Solid call. {nm} VictorY Jul 24, 06:15

Disagree about Captain America being a known quantity. I'd even bet that many would recognize the shield and character just by image alone. {nm} TheWeekendWarrior Jul 24, 07:45

Most would recognize the shield on its own. You don't get to be a 70 year old comic by not being known. ;) {nm} Dorfman Jul 24, 07:54

The other comic properties I named all made it to TV series, and I attribute their being well-known to crossing over. second gary Jul 24, 08:01

Captain America did have a movie. lol course it was a tv movie... 2 tv movies Dorfman Jul 24, 09:56

U mention Wonder Woman... DC did a better job of marketing their heroes for tv series. remember the Super Friends? lol {nm} Dorfman Jul 24, 09:58

Found an interesting link. Captain America Cartoon that never happened. Promo Reel at bottom of article Dorfman Jul 24, 10:02

I think Potter evaded most everybody {nm} Dorfman Jul 24, 10:04

It always was going to have a limited audience because you had to watch the previous 7 movies to see it. It was not by any means a stand pmb Jul 24, 08:35

When you take out the midnight, the drop is similar to what HP3 experienced, so not really totally unforeseen xiayun Jul 24, 11:29

A front-loaded finale? Unheard of! :) {nm} SparkleMotion Jul 24, 12:43
