Um....completely and utterly incorrect
DC comics outsold Marvel till 1965. Marvel kept this sales lead, not through popularity but through a better distribution chain and deeper discounts on bulk sales.
The playing field leveled from the mid to late 90's when the industry went kersplat and specialty stores (comic book stores) were the main distrib points so what sold is what got volume and could change month to month.
Taking that last fact into account....Flash and Iron Man don't sell as much as Green Lantern. The 2 regular issues of GL titles have been consistently in the top 10 of regular issue (non tie-ins, #1s, deaths, and other gimmicks) sales for months while those two are not regulars in the top 50. (According to Diamond's #s)
General popularity wise? None of those 3 are on the general public's radar till they get/got their movies. Iron Man had a crap cartoon that couldn't last 2 years in syndication at a time when syndication made sense. Flash and GL at least had Justice League and network in SuperPowers/Friends. But even given that be real. They were all on the same level in general awareness till Iron Man came out.
Another popularity fact. Iron Man and GL had stand alone animated movies and GL has outgrossed it 6.2mill to 5.3mill....and that's with Iron Man's big screen debut pushing those sales while GL was 2 years away.
GL didn't sell as well as Iron Man b/c it was a far inferior movie. Bottom Line.
