MY GOD! that is an insanely high budget for John Carter. Even if it's somewhat below $300M there is no excuse for it to cost more than AIWL.

I wonder what the hell Disney was thinking when they decided to greenlight this? There isn't even a gurantee the movie will even make $100M domestic.

DL Disney scraps [LONER] (link) tealfan Aug 12, 19:09

That is a damn shame for Armie Hammer. Hope someone finds a way to use him as well as LONER might've {nm} Jane_Citizen Aug 12, 19:19

MOVIE IS NOT SCRAPPED. SCROLL UP A COUPLE OF POSTS {nm} PVL Admin Aug 12, 21:39

Ah, nice to be home on a Friday night. {nm} edzep Aug 12, 19:20

DARN lucky for me!!! {nm} PVL Admin Aug 12, 19:24

U don't need to be home, all u need is a smartphone with Internet connection ;) {nm} karspov Aug 12, 19:30

Like me ;) {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Aug 12, 19:42

Wish they'd get forums up on the mobile site though {nm} SparkleMotion Aug 12, 20:00

A $250M Western? What, it's got aliens? $300M for OMARS?! {nm} Antibody Aug 12, 19:21

OMARS has colossal bust written all over it {nm} SparkleMotion Aug 12, 19:33

Everytime I see the ticker symbol OMARS, I think if Omar from The Wire. Which keeps making me think the movie will be good. {nm} Paul2k Aug 12, 19:36

OMARS COMING!!!!!! {nm} thesilverfox Aug 12, 19:46

Ha! Well played {nm} SparkleMotion Aug 12, 19:52

I liked Omar. One of the more noble characters in the series. Got to have a code. {nm} edzep Aug 12, 20:22

For that money, they should have gone full Avatard rather than film in the generic Southwest. {nm} Antibody Aug 12, 19:37

MY GOD! that is an insanely high budget for John Carter. Even if it's somewhat below $300M there is no excuse for it to cost more than AIWL. wrongturn687 Aug 12, 19:39

They put faith in Stanton's filmmaking talents, I guess. This could make or break his live action career. {nm} tribefan695 Aug 12, 19:43

What is AIWL? {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Aug 12, 21:09

alice in wonderland, i'm assuming {nm} Andre C Aug 12, 21:53

I wonder what the real reason is. $50M is hardly a credible reason; perhaps the movie-related toys were testing poorly. {nm} second gary Aug 12, 19:42

The real reason is CBALN's poor performance. {nm} Antibody Aug 12, 19:43

Ding! {nm} Moviesnob Aug 12, 19:47

Seems odd for just one mediocre performance from a quasi-western to scare them off a Depp vehicle. {nm} SparkleMotion Aug 12, 19:54

Two when you count RANGO, also JDEPP-GVERB. {nm} Antibody Aug 12, 19:57

Three when you add JOHEX. {nm} Antibody Aug 12, 20:36

I wouldn't - JOHEX more like CBALN. Id expect a True Grit meets Pirates from LONER {nm} SparkleMotion Aug 12, 20:40

There is a vast difference between a 40 something JDEPP and a 65 something HFORD in terms of bank. And GVERB vs. JFAVR. second gary Aug 12, 20:21

It's the genre. What can JDEPP pull outside the special-effects filled fantasy genre? Antibody Aug 12, 20:26

I think PIRT1 is a pure Depp-vehicle in which the story (such as it was) and everything else was immaterial. ALICE and Wonka the same... second gary Aug 12, 20:33

Depp played weird quirky characters in all three movies. In LONER, he'd be playing Tonto. {nm} RogerMore Aug 12, 20:59

But he could make Tonto Caliban, or Jeeves, or... I trust that he would have or may yet figure out something compelling and fun. {nm} second gary Aug 12, 21:15

sounds like disney wants to focus on pirates 5...you cant argue against a billion dollar franchise {nm} Nightfury82 Aug 12, 19:44

It honestly sounds like Hollywood just doesn't know how to maintain budgets anymore. I mean John Carter costing more than Avengers and TDKR wrongturn687 Aug 12, 19:49

I'd be curious to know how Stanton did on budget for his Pixar films (or if that was even a concern for him and Pixar). Paul2k Aug 12, 19:53

Finding Nemo's was $94 million; WALL-E's was almost double that, though still cheaper than TS3 and Cars 2. {nm} tribefan695 Aug 12, 19:55

Those are considerable budgets for animation {nm} SparkleMotion Aug 12, 20:00

Why do these run so high? SparkleMotion Aug 12, 20:19

2nd time this has happened to him. He was to play Batman in the Justice League movie until WB pulled the plug in 2007 before the WGA strike {nm} Andre C Aug 12, 19:51

whoops, meant to post this on the armie hammer comment {nm} Andre C Aug 12, 19:52

yeah, he has star written all over him, but he needs to find the right role soon {nm} Jane_Citizen Aug 12, 20:25

Further, I wonder if this has an effect on DFINC's hopes for a 70% CG 20LUS? Or is that so far down the line that it's moot? {nm} Paul2k Aug 12, 19:58

ughh...missed this by 8 minutes. worse day I have had in a long time. oh well. just means they are focusing on PIRT5. {nm} lobogotti Aug 12, 19:58

*worst {nm} lobogotti Aug 12, 19:59

Go to a movie, relax, come back to find my fund has imploded! 1.20 loss :( {nm} islander Aug 12, 19:59

"Gentlemen! You can't go to movies! This is the War Room!" {nm} second buck turgidson Aug 12, 20:23

The budget's way too big, but I bet if Depp really wants this and signs on to Pirates 5 and 6, this will be back on track. {nm} LanceStorm22 Aug 12, 20:56

I see it has gone the way of the Dow Jones? {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Aug 12, 21:03
