Kiss Me, Stupid (1964, #Wilder, B): Suburban matrimony clashes with entertainment industry amorality in a risqué (yet conservative) romp.
Annie Hall (1977, A): Inventive & pitch perfect #Allen: how to deal with mortality by appreciating the shortcomings of love, life & reason.
Born Yesterday (1950, C+): Stylistically passé (protracted scenes, banal staging, awkward pacing) but its political theme is topical again.
The Lady Eve (1941, B): Stanwyck & Fonda's courtship is a fraudulent affair, but true love trumps all tricks(ters) in a mischievous romcom.
She Done Him Wrong (1933, C-): Mae West's many male lovers add up to a byzantine, aimless plot, that only serves to showcase her wisecracks.
9 (2009, C): Dystopian scifi animation with endearing characters. But the narrative is skimpy and relies more on atmosphere than reason.
Super 8 (2011, B-): #Abrams can stage a scene like #Spielberg. But the old master can teach him a thing or two about scripting & story arcs.
Win Win (2011, C-): The music, writing & some of the acting... all smack of made-for-tv. Only this film's heart is big enough for theatres.
The Adventures of Tintin (2011, B+): Rollercoaster action sequences & fun 3D visuals eclipse the wit. The secondary characters trump Tintin.
Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010, C+): Quirky but rambling trip through Chauvet caves. To his credit, #Herzog is not awed by 3D technology.
Bad Teacher (2011, E): In this case, 'R-rated' is an anagram for 'retarded'. No aspect of this asinine comedy works, not even the cynicism.
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011, C-): Painted-by-numbers action, dialogue written on autopilot, but shamelessly cheesy & nostalgic.
Hanna (2011, D+): #Wright's showy, mathematical directing smothers all emotional impact of this twisted but pointless fairytale. Good music.
