The franchise starter's gross resulted from buzz, not quality. Thus, the 2nd film & on are susceptible to dips. $180 is too high.
A recent example is "The Expendables 2." A future example is "Avatar 2." Of course, exceptions to the rule surface when the sequel is genuinely better...hopefully that will be the case with "Catching Fire," but Francis Lawrence's track record for quality is atrocious.
