Conan The Barbarian (2011, D-)

Was surprised at how much I enjoyed John Carter. Wife enjoyed it too. Possibly the best cg animation integration I've seen ever. Very little of that "oh look, they're in front of a green screen now" feel where the lighting and colors look off or the computer characters look unreal.

21JST started off weak IMHO, a bit scattershot and half-baked, but once they got their assignment and started going to school, it really took off.

TDKR was disappointing to me, but then I realized that I wasn't a huge fan of Dark Knight either. DK felt bloated and unwieldy to me, TDKR even more so. Overstuffed with ideas, characters, and plotlines...would have loved to see the whole story play out as a tv series, or shorter movies? In cramming so much into each movie, I lost flow and momentum, and they just seemed to drag on and on. And in TDKR, I WANTED to get a better sense of the amount of time that was passing between sections, especially when Gotham was "No Man's Land"ed for 3 months and Bruce was imprisoned. And Bane's voice- good god, I found that awful. Not only that he was so difficult to hear and understand sometimes, but also the choice of the voice that Tom Hardy went with. He sounded like a silly Bond villain. Everytime he spoke, it pulled me out of the film. And so many lapses in logic on all parts. That "How It Should Have Ended" video nailed a bunch of them, but there were more.

And rewatched The Seven Samurai (A+), Chronicles of Riddick Director's Cut (B-), and a bunch of Pixar and Ghibli films that I've started showing my now-5-month-old as a daily routine around her 11 AM naptime. I put her in her swing then start one of the movies and she'll watch for 10-15 minutes before falling asleep. Too young to start showing her these movies?

I did, a few months back, that's how I heard about Troll 2, but I need to watch the first one before even if it's unrelated... :) {nm} slappydavid Sep 03, 20:21

On the "too young" question... second gary Sep 03, 20:47

With the Ghibli films, I've been watching them in Japanese with English subs and reading those aloud so it's LIKE I'm reading to her, right? {nm} Paul2k Sep 04, 04:56

Ah, no; well, I've never thought about this question, but I think it's a no. That said, film literacy is a literacy, too. {nm} second gary Sep 04, 10:28

p.s. In Michael Ondaatje's novel "In the skin of a lion," immigrants in Toronto (c. 1915-35) practice their English by repeat viewings... second gary Sep 04, 10:31
