MYSKP was pure fiction; XMEAS is (mostly) true. And any parent can relate to the story. The problem's not the premise, it's BFRAS.
It's one of those stories that newspaper writers enjoyed describing as 'Hollywood,' 'cinematic,' or 'fairy tale.' So it was probably inevitable that it would make the leap to the screen. There's a lot of compelling material here, but to sustain a feature-length treatment, there needed to be much more focus on character, because there just isn't a hell of a lot of plot. You can more or less sum it up in a sentence.
So the director casts...Brendon Fraser? Did they make that decision based on his emotional range, his subtle and nuanced acting, or his compelling screen presence? I just don't get it. The whole movie rests on the internal conflict of BFRAS' character. The role needed a great actor to pull it off. And we get BFRAS.
It's sad, really. This could've been a wonderful picture.
