After reading posts below, I see that folks here seem to think that superhero films have already been dark. Well...
...Very few have when considering the source material. The Dark Knight tril is dark? Hardly when you compare it to many stories told in the books. The only actual dark story I can offhand think of (ultra-violence alone doesn't count so the Punisher attemps don't work here) is Sin City.
I mean, there are shades of dark I guess that will show in TDK stuff and SvB and so on, but that is not what I mean when I say "dark". Dark is having villains win or, often, having a true bad guy be the person you root for. In my brief time reading comics, several characters would fall into that role. Deadpool was one (though I wasn't a fan) because he was written obscene and killed without remorse (something Marvel didn't do often at that time). Preacher and Transmetropolitan and several other Vertigo titles also come to mind.
I'm looking forward to some actual dark superhero movies/shows coming in the future. When it comes to Horror movies or superhero movies the difference, to me, between PG-13 and R is that only one of them treats the audience as an adult viewer and let's the story tell itself without inhibitions.
