I think it's really hard to draw Thursday comparisons for animateds, just because they are so small in comparison with the OW
For example, Home did $0.65M with a late March release date last year, and had an OW of $52.1M
But that's less than Gods of Egypt last week, which opened to $14M and about the same as The Witch the week before that ($8.8M OW). Those were obvious sub-$15M openers from their preview #s, while Home was an over-performer.
It's also about 1/2 of The Good Dinosaur's preview #, and that movie's 5-day was about the same as Home's 3-day. The Good Dinosaur is probably the best example of an animated movie under-performing since previews became common, but it had better preview #s than many animated hits including Frozen, Big Hero 6, Sponge-Bob 2. (In part, thanks to the holiday)
The only take-away (for me) is that what would be a mediocre Thursday number for any other movie, doesn't mean anything for an animated movie. For these movies, it may be better to wait for matinees.
