Older audiences are under-served, but they don't go opening weekends

Posted by: drakkar on May 10, 14:30 in response to shadowking's post Pre-Netflix/VOD/streaming I think this is a movie that...

There was an Variety article a few months back that showed how much audiences change through releases, becoming older.  But all the tracking is aimed at the opening weekend when movies mostly attract a younger audience, so it largely gets ignored.  The example was SW:TFA which was over 70% male and under 30 opening night and by the end of its run, the average person in theaters was female and over 40.

My dad is retired and goes to see far more movies in theaters than I do since he has more free time and grew up when people went Saturdays to the movies. He takes grandkids to a lot of kids' movies, but other than that, he struggles to find movies he wants to see.

But it's not cool to make movies that appeal to the 50+ retiree audience.  There are over 100 million Americans over the age of 50, but Hollywood considers 35 "old".

DL preview: MONYM may end up $10M-$12M; 6MRDR hoping for $4M-$5M, but estimates at around $3M Antibody May 10, 13:21

Clooney just has very little draw. It's amazing to me that he's such an A Lister. {nm} lobogotti May 10, 13:24

The film doesn't look that bad, though. Roberts is more of a surprise to me - great actress but not an automatic draw. {nm} RollingThunder May 10, 13:26

They're both past their prime. O'Connell is too young for the part. The story makes more sense if it's a retiree who lost his life savings {nm} Antibody May 10, 13:28

John Q made $72M {nm} lobogotti May 10, 14:05

DWASH was 48, CHris O'Connell is 25. {nm} Antibody May 10, 14:08

yes, I was helping you make your point. {nm} lobogotti May 10, 14:11

Gotcha. The guy is not even married or have kids. No reason for him to throw is life away. {nm} Antibody May 10, 14:13

agree. that said, like Thunder, I didn't think the film looked bad when I first saw the trailer. lobogotti May 10, 14:18

Might even work better to have them reverse roles...older man Clooney loses retirement after listening to next hot star O'Connell {nm} RazorHawk May 10, 17:52

originally when I saw the trailer I thought "maybe this will do well", but I don't know what is considered well in this case. lobogotti May 10, 13:37

Pre-Netflix/VOD/streaming I think this is a movie that would've done well in theaters shadowking May 10, 13:47

Hit the nail on the head {nm} RickandMorty May 10, 13:50

good points, I agree. {nm} lobogotti May 10, 13:52

Older audiences are under-served, but they don't go opening weekends drakkar May 10, 14:30

great insight {nm} lobogotti May 10, 14:33

Yeah, it's telling that whenever there's a Hollywood movie made about old people, it always does well post-OW {nm} RogerMore May 10, 14:48

A listers still are a listers as long as they get movies made. {nm} Moviesnob May 10, 13:51

so Clooney gets this made, but O'Connell doesn't correct? that being the case, I doubt Clooney ever stops being an A Lister lobogotti May 10, 13:54

well, i meant bigger than indie films then. Films designed for a wide and worldwide release {nm} Moviesnob May 10, 14:09

gotcha. personally I think hollywood might stop knocking on his door pretty soon. I look for him lobogotti May 10, 14:16

dont forget the first rule: make a good movie (rotten tomatoes scores on those movies: 31(MM), 50(tomorrow) and gravity was a 96) {nm} Moviesnob May 10, 14:19

yes indeed, make a good one. probably telling why Money M has an embargo. {nm} lobogotti May 10, 14:21

cannes screening {nm} Moviesnob May 10, 14:23

I wouldn't be surprised to see him go into politics. Sooner if Clinton gets elected or later if not. {nm} hyperzeitgeist May 10, 14:20

he'd be as good as anyone at it. {nm} lobogotti May 10, 14:22

Except he seems to actually have a conscience. {nm} BSmurf May 10, 17:16

He's an awesome actor but best served in ensemble pieces IMO. Oceans 11 for example. {nm} Hersheybar May 10, 16:50

Clooney is a draw for movies like MIchael Clayton and Descendants. Plus this is too soon after Big Short. {nm} leo21 May 10, 17:26
