I find that how you described Gone Girl, about letting it play in the background when it is on HBO

is very similar to how I view the film.  meaning quality of score, cinematography, direction make it a very glossy film and hard to turn away.  the film itself isn't great, but the fact Fincher can get me to repeatedly stare at it speaks highly about how talented he is (IMO).

but for me, that's the norm for any of his films that air on cable, especially Fight Club, Zodiac and Social Network.
