Academy and Guild screenings are consistently jamb packed in the fall and early Winter. So I'm not so sure.

Academy and Guild members clamor for screenings.

I guess I'd say that if Netflix is interested in a new way of seeing movies, why would be they interested in trying to infiltrate the old codifiers like the Oscars? Why do they even care about them? They're desperately trying to get movie theaters to shut down, they've been at it for years now, so I don't get why they're invested in the Oscars. They've got the money, why don't they just go in with Amazon and Hulu and create some new award for streaming, if they don't like the Emmy option.

They clearly are not interested in exhibtion, they don't care about that kind of thing, the way films look and how they're seen, that's not what they do. So I just don't get what they care about the Oscars for. If they want to move forward, why look back?

ironically, i'd wager a large swath of Academy voters only watch the movies they're voting on each year via screeners at home {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 22, 19:01

a few hundred people per screening out of 6,000+ Academy members. everyone i know in the guilds mostly waits for the screeners {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 22, 23:34

(for the record, i'm Team Spielberg myself. Netflix should play the awards season game if they want to win the awards) {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 22, 23:37

I actually agree. how is it different to HBO-produced films? {nm} whatmary Mar 23, 06:41

HBO can qualify their films by screening them theatrically. {nm} Antibody Mar 23, 07:35

aside from the docs, they probably only have 2-3 movies per year that are legit award contenders as it is. {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 23, 09:24

they want people to watch movies on their platform. its about behavior not revenue {nm} Moviesnob Mar 23, 10:11

i get why they think they have to do it this way but it seems like such a weird hill to die on. putting their best features in theaters can slipping jimmy Mar 23, 11:32

I think the biggest fkaw is thinking distribution is a one size fits all model {nm} Moviesnob Mar 23, 15:20

If you wanna release a TV movie I think that's great. Why complain about Oscar Nominations when you go that route? It makes no sense. goodvibe61 Mar 24, 00:04

Having working in theaters over 20 years, I always think about what will kill theaters. My thoughts on moviegoing in the maybe Catzan Mar 24, 15:50

Oscars would help to validate them with their audience and increase the value of their product RogerMore Mar 23, 06:08

especially with Docs. They basically own that space now with a few exceptions {nm} Moviesnob Mar 23, 06:58
