But I think that's why Rian wanted to do the project - he got to do whatever he wanted without interference

Posted by: Silverblue76 on Jun 13, 14:39 in response to slipping jimmy's post i thought the talk at the time was when they fired Arndt,...

Rian is quoted as saying he was surprised that there wasn't a whiteboard which listed all the plot points and he had broad discussions the the Lucasfilm team about where the story was going but he liked working on TLJ because he had the freedom to do whatever he wanted. It was the same as working on Looper - which is crazy to give someone like him that much freedom.

How many writers quit due to interference from producers or the studio? Or comic book writers quit because of editorial interference?

I think that's a selling point to attract top writer/directors - do whatever you want. The benefit Disney & Lucasfilm have is the flexiblity to do whatever new idea those superstar writer/directors come up with.

TLJ producer Ram Bergman is quoted as saying that 90% of what audiences saw on the screen is Rian's FIRST DRAFT he wrote in 2 weeks - which I think is the biggest core issue with TLJ (there was no oversight to what Rian was doing and they just went with his first draft).

GLUCA tells JCAME that his STAR7-9 would've focused on the Whills, creature that feed off the Force. Antibody Jun 13, 11:00

I don't know any inside stories about what happened to star wars/lucasfilm, but his last line here "I never got to finish" makes it sound... MattW Jun 13, 11:06

he delivered his outlines/treatments to Disney at the time that Lucasfilm was sold to them. they threw them in the trash and hired JJ slipping jimmy Jun 13, 11:10

Was he prevented from making a sequel trilogy before the sale? I thought he was solely in charge of the whole franchise up to then {nm} MattW Jun 13, 11:15

my understanding is that he had been developing the ideas for a while with the intention of making them when Disney came knocking {nm} slipping jimmy Jun 13, 11:33

It still boggles my mind that they rushed to make 7 without outlining 8 and 9. {nm} Antibody Jun 13, 11:16

+1 - Absolutely {nm} -JPV- Jun 13, 11:31

i thought the talk at the time was when they fired Arndt, then KK, JJ, and Kasdan huddled up to re-break the story for the whole trilogy slipping jimmy Jun 13, 11:35

The character Poe is an example that they're making it up as they go along. {nm} Antibody Jun 13, 11:45

thats how Abrams works, right? we'll find the story as we go approach {nm} Moviesnob Jun 13, 12:22

But that's not how Disney, one would think, works. At the very least some kind of loose outline for the trilogy. {nm} -JPV- Jun 13, 12:30

Lucasfilm is not synonymous with Disney. KK's biggest headaches have been her struggles with talent and getting the right talent with the Moviesnob Jun 13, 12:51

Oh lordy! You might be right. If TFA is the 1st season of Lost, Episode 9 is gonna make TLJ look like The Godfather Part II {nm} JSpicoli13 Jun 13, 16:05

What's really dumbfounding is Disney deciding to move away from Jedi & Sith, make the force like a superpower and trash the OT, shows .. Baron_Darcon2017 Jun 13, 12:13

George Lucas had developed story treatments for 7-9 as part of the sale (and Solo was in the works before the sale too). Disney .... notfabio Jun 13, 11:16

without having read the treatments myself (and i feel this way about the prequels too), there is a version of George's story that could be slipping jimmy Jun 13, 11:42

The outside forces were possibly lots of people saying some variation of "My god George, do you know how stupid that sounds?" {nm} DTravel Jun 13, 12:48

no more or less stupid than the original Star Wars pitch must have sounded in 1973. his first drafts of that were unreadable and unfilmable slipping jimmy Jun 13, 13:42

Sounds like you're saying GLUCA used the Force to create the Force. DTravel Jun 14, 14:07

"So what you're saying is The Force has . . . avatars?" {nm} JCAME Jun 13, 11:09
